Stone up - let's preserve our heritage!

Dry stone walling represents the intangible heritage of mankind, a unique adaptation of communities to the challenges of the environment and nature, an important component of the landscape and identity. Despite its uniqueness, however, the skills of dry stone walling are dying out.

As part of the traditional Fire in the Alps event, which takes place every year on the second Saturday in August, we organized a work action to restore a dry stone wall, enabling experiential and intergenerational learning, which was once used to pass on knowledge, tradition, and sensitivity to the condition and preservation of heritage.

On the land of Albert Kravanje in the village Na skali, which overlooks the Soča River, we fixed up parts of the dry stone wall that had been worn down by time. We did this with the help of 15 volunteers and under the watchful eye of the wall's owner, dry stone wall expert Boris Čok, and master builder Ivan Pavlin. We were also joined by Ms. Andrejka Ščukovt from the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, Nova Gorica Regional Unit. The experts not only ensured that the restoration was carried out properly, but also joined interesting and engaging conversations about the many aspects of heritage in this area.

A big thanks goes out to the awesome young people who, through their hard work and dedication, gave the walls a fresh look, helped make it a great day, and showed that our heritage has a future.

Fire in the Alps 2025: Encounter with Dry Stone Walling was organized as part of the KamenGor project, co-financed by the Ministry of Culture, and the international Via Alpina Youth project, co-financed by the European Union's Erasmus+ program.
